Well, those were some Oscars, eh? It felt like most of the categories were preordained, and Ellen played it a little safe (as did most of the red carpet), but all in all it was a perfectly fine ceremony. (And I won my group’s Oscar poll, so, heeeyyy.)
Now that we’ve all come back down to Earth, here are a few of my top picks of the night:
Best Dressed: Lupita Nyong’o, Naomi Watts, Kate Hudson, & Portia de Rossi
Best Dressed – Vanity Fair’s Oscar Party: Kate Hudson, Elisabeth Moss, Kristen Bell & Zooey “She Stole My Dress” Deschanel*
*I don’t really own this dress. But I’ve had my eye on it for some time and am still upset it’s not mine.
Best Acceptance Speech: Lupita Nyong’o for 12 Years a Slave
Closely followed by Cate Blancett’s remarks: “… and to the audiences who went to see it and perhaps those of us in the industry who are still foolishly clinging to the idea that female films with women at the center are niche experiences. They are not. Audiences want to see them and, in fact, they earn money. The world is round, people.” PREACH.
Best Flub: John Travolta mispronouncing Idina Menzel’s name. That one’s going to last a long time, guys. Just ask Slate.
Best Surprise: Spike Jonze winning Best Original Screenplay for Her (my favorite movie of the year). Plus, don’t you just want to squeeze Spike Jonze?
